Spartans PRs and Qualifications Highlight Day One of MW Outdoor Championships

CLOVIS, Calif. – Kendall McCoy set three personal bests in the Heptathlon while Alyssa Bean, Cameron Tarver, Christopher Coats, and Marcel Bovell all punched their tickets to finals on Championship Saturday to lead San José State Track & Field on the first day of competition at the Credit Union 1 2025 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday.

The first day of competition saw the Spartans bring energy, speed, and strength to the field, led off by McCoy, who delivered a phenomenal showing in the Heptathlon. McCoy recorded three personal bests, putting together one of her most complete performances:

  • 100m Hurdles: 14.23 seconds (PR)
  • High Jump: 1.57m (5’ 1¾”) (PR)
  • 200m: 26.06 seconds (PR)

In the sprints, SJSU proved they are still a force to be reckoned with.

Women's Highlights

  • Bean continued her stellar season by winning her heat in the 200m prelims with a personal best time of 23.23 seconds. That mark was the second-fastest overall time of the day and now ranks as the second-fastest Women’s 200m in program history.
  • Bean’s time places her inside the NCAA West Outdoor Qualifying list in a tie for 32nd. 
  • Sharli’e McCuller also had a breakthrough, clocking a personal best time of 24.32 seconds in the same event.

Men's Highlights

On the men’s side, the 200m Prelims were dominated by Spartan speed, their performances set the stage for a thrilling final on Championship Saturday.:

  • Tarver won his heat with a time of 20.52 seconds, a season-best and the fastest overall time across all heats.
  • Tarver’s time puts him comfortably inside the NCAA West Outdoor Qualifying list in 12th. 
  • Coats followed close behind, also winning his heat with a time of 20.70 seconds, the second-best overall time.
  • In the men’s 400m hurdles, Bovell earned his place in the final with a personal best time of 54.46 seconds, showing impressive form and poise for the freshman.
  • Nathaniel Guillory posted a season-best 21.32 seconds in the men’s 200m, capping a solid team-wide showing in the sprint events on day one.
