Spartans Fall to Wolf Pack on Friday Night

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Despite a multi-hit performance from Alex Fernandes, San José State baseball (25-28, 12-17 MW) fell to Nevada (33-20, 19-10 MW) by a score of 12-0 on Friday evening at Excite Ballpark.

Fernandes led the Spartans at the plate, going 2-for-4, while designated hitter Neil Jansen also chipped in with a double and a single. However, the Spartan offense was unable to break through against a dominant performance from Nevada’s starter, Alejandro Castro, who tossed seven shutout innings, scattering seven hits and striking out four. The Wolf Pack piled on 12 runs on 16 hits, including a 3-for-6, five-RBI night from Shane Yamaguchi.

After four scoreless innings to open the game, Nevada erupted for six runs in the fifth and added to their lead with three more in the final two innings. David Thomas (1-5) took the loss for San José State, allowing six earned runs across 4.2 innings.

The Spartans now look ahead to a pivotal regular season finale.

Postseason Picture:

San José State can clinch a berth in the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship with:

  • A win on Saturday over Nevada
  • A loss, if Air Force also loses
  • A three-way tie involving SJSU, Air Force, and either San Diego State or Washington State

A Spartan loss combined with an Air Force win would end San José State’s season

UP NEXT: San José State returns to Excite Ballpark on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. for Senior Day and the final game of the regular season. The matchup against Nevada will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network.
