Spartans Surge Past Lobos in Mountain West Championship Opener

MESA, Ariz. – EJ McGrew, Nolan George and Tyler Albanese combined for six strikeouts, allowing only three runs and nine hits to lead the No. 6 seed San José State baseball team (27-28, 13-17 MW) in a 6-3 victory over No. 3 seed New Mexico (30-23, 17-13 MW) at Sloan Park on Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the Mountain West Championships. With the win, the Spartans are one of four teams remaining who will compete in a double elimination bracket in the tournament.

After falling behind early on a second-inning solo home run by New Mexico, the Spartans responded with a four-run fourth inning, capitalizing on a Lobo throwing error and clutch RBI hits from Neil Jansen and Jake Maroney. The Spartans would never trail again, adding insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

On the mound, McGrew got the start and held the Lobos to one run across 3.2 innings. George (4–4) picked up the win in relief, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing just two runs. Albanese closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning, earning his eighth save of the season.

  • Albanese struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win for the Spartans
  • Jeriah Lewis went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. He leads the Spartans with 41 RBIs on the season
