This Week in Spartan Athletics May 26 - June 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. - This Week in San José State Athletics returns to see what's ahead for the Spartans! 

Track and Field 

The San José State track & field team will send 10 athletes in total, six women and four men, to compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds this Wednesday through Saturday, May 28-31. The competition will kick off with men’s first-round events on Wednesday, starting at 10:00 a.m. CST from E.B. Cushing Stadium at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. The events can be seen on ESPN+.

  • In order to qualify for the NCAA West Prelim the top 48 declared athletes were accepted into the first round competitions for each individual event and the top 24 declared relay teams were accepted into the first round competitions for each relay event.
  • The top 12 competitors from each individual event and the top 12 teams from each relay event will advance to the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. 
  • The Spartans will send 10 athletes to College Station to compete across eight individual events.
  • Emilia Sjostrand, Katharina Graman and Alyssa Bean will be the Spartans competing in multiple events this week. Sjostrand and Graman will compete in both the long jump and triple jump, while Bean will run in the 200m and 400m. 
  • The Spartans are coming off of a strong performance at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Clovis, Calif. two weeks ago.
  • The Spartans finished the weekend with 13 medals overall, four golds, five silvers, and four bronzes.
  • SJSU had 12 athletes earn All-Mountain West honors after their performances at the conference championships. 
  • Speed City has now sent athletes to the NCAA first rounds and national meet across the last five indoor and outdoor seasons, dating back to early 2023.
  • Sjostrand, Bean, Eve Divinity, Sky Hagan and Cameron Tarver will all be returning to the NCAA West Prelims after making the trip last season for the Spartans.
  • Graduate transfer, Simone Johnson will be returning to the NCAA West Prelims for the second time in her career after competing in the triple jump in 2023.
  • For Graman, Christopher Coats, Ethan Fong, and Deshawn Banks, this will be the first trip of their careers to the NCAA West Prelims. 
  • Senior jumper, Sjostrand, will compete in her sixth consecutive NCAA west preliminary rounds across both indoor and outdoor seasons.  
  • Sjostrand earned first-team All-American honors in the Triple jump and second-team All-American honors in the Long Jump last season.  
  • Tarver will be making his second consecutive trip to the NCAA West Prelims, he earned second-team All-American honors last season at the NCAA national meet as part of SJSU’s men’s 4x100 Relay squad.
