Tarver Qualifies for Nationals on Day Three of NCAA West Prelims

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Cameron Tarver finished third in his heat of the Men’s 200m quarterfinals to earn an automatic qualification and punch his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. to lead San José State Track & Field after the third day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds hosted by Texas A&M on Friday from E.B. Cushing Stadium.

Tarver finished third in his heat with a time of 20.55 seconds, earning an automatic qualification to the national meet. This marks Tarver’s second consecutive appearance at nationals, and his first as an individual in the 200m event. Last year, he advanced to nationals as a member of the Spartans’ 4x100-meter relay team. His performance on Friday continued a streak of excellence, as it was his fourth straight race in the 200m, clocking in under 20.60 seconds.

Also competing for the Spartans on day three were:

  • Deshawn Banks in the Men’s High Jump, who cleared a personal best of 2.09 meters (6-10¼) but unfortunately did not advance, ending his season.
  • Ethan Fong in the Men’s Triple Jump, finished with a mark of 14.39 meters (47-2½), but also unfortunately did not move on to nationals, ending his season.

Tomorrow, Emilia Sjostrand, Simone Johnson, Katharina Graman and Sky Hagan will compete for the Spartans as the women’s side will close NCAA West Prelim competition. Hagan will compete in the quarterfinals of the 100m Hurdles while Sjostrand, Johnson, and Graman will compete in the Triple Jump. Each athlete can earn a spot in the national championships with a top-12 finish in their respective events.
