Spartans Edge UNLV in Sunday Thriller Presented by El Camino Health

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Rocco Caballero hit the go-ahead home run and Jeriah Lewis went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base to lead the San José State baseball team (23-25, 10-14 MW) in a 4-3 victory over UNLV (26-21, 11-13 MW) at Excite Ballpark on Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three game series, presented by El Camino Health.

The Spartans jumped out early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, fueled by RBI singles from Jake McCoy and Lewis. UNLV responded with runs in the third and sixth innings to tie the game at 2-2. SJSU reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run by Caballero followed by an RBI double from McCoy which plated Zach Chamizo from first.

UNLV made one final push in the top of the ninth, but Tyler Albanese shut the door to seal the victory. EJ McGrew (7-1) earned the win in relief with two shutout innings. Kyle Calzadiaz struck out seven over five innings in the start for the Spartans.

  • This marks the second time this season Lewis tallied four hits and his first time in his career batting 4-for-4
  • Caballero’s home run was his fourth of the season and second of the series
  • After going 2-for-5, Caballero has recorded multiple hits in six out of his last seven games
  • Caballero extended his on base streak to 15 games
  • McCoy tallied two RBIs, marking his ninth multi-RBI game of the season
  • Chamizo extended his hitstreak to10 games and on base streak to 16 games 
  • Calzadiaz struck out a season-high seven batters
  • McGrew earned his seventh win of the season, putting him tied for first for most wins in the Mountain West
  • Albanese tallied his seventh save of the season
