OAKMONT, Pa. - San José State men's golf alumni Mark Hubbard and Kevin Velo will represent the Spartans in the 125th U.S. Open Championship, scheduled for June 12–15 at the historic Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
This marks the first time since 1993 that two former SJSU men's golf team members have qualified for the same U.S. Open (Roger Maltbie, Mark Wiebe), underscoring the university's enduring legacy in collegiate and professional golf.
Mark Hubbard: Veteran Presence Returns to Oakmont
A 2011 SJSU graduate, Hubbard secured his spot in the 2025 U.S. Open by shooting a 64-70—134 at the final qualifier in Ontario, Canada. This will be his third U.S. Open appearance, following a T-50 finish at Pinehurst in 2024. Hubbard, who turned professional in 2012, boasts a career highlighted by a 2019 Korn Ferry Tour victory and over $10 million in PGA Tour earnings. In the current season, he has made 20 of 22 cuts, including five top-five finishes, and ranks 65th in the FedEx Cup standings.
Kevin Velo: Rising Star Makes Major Debut
Making his U.S. Open debut, 2019 SJSU graduate Kevin Velo earned his place by carding a 65-67—132 at the Lambton Golf & Country Club qualifier in Toronto, Ontario. Velo turned professional in 2020 and has rapidly ascended through the ranks, highlighted by a playoff victory at the 2024 Astara Golf Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour. His consistent performance, including eight top-25 finishes in 19 starts, secured his PGA Tour card for the 2025 season.
A Testament to Spartan Excellence
Both golfers honed their skills under the guidance of SJSU's esteemed golf program and head coach John Kennaday. Hubbard clinched the 2011 Western Athletic Conference title, while Velo was a four-time recipient of the Ken Venturi Most Valuable Player award and led the team in scoring average throughout his collegiate career.
