NORTHBROOK, Ill. - San José State linebacker Taniela Latu has been named a nominee for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, as announced Tuesday by Allstate and the Wuerffel Foundation.

Latu has distinguished himself as a leader on and off the field for the Spartans. In addition to his contributions on defense, he serves as a dedicated youth mentor and plays a key role in the Beyond Sparta program, which supports student-athlete development and community engagement. This week, Latu is also representing San José State at the 2025 Old Trapper Mountain West Football Media Days.

“I’ve been a part of this team, and these players aren’t just showing up, they’re standing out,” said Sam Acho, ESPN analyst, former NFL linebacker, author, and a 2010 Good Works Team member and Allstate Wuerffel Trophy recipient. “Their commitment to service creates lasting change and inspires the next generation.”

This year marks the second collaboration between Allstate and the Wuerffel Foundation, aligning two of college football’s most prestigious honors in community service: the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy. Together, these awards celebrate student-athletes who exemplify excellence in service, academics, and athletics.

“When nearly 200 young athletes choose to serve, it creates a ripple effect far beyond the game,” said Danny Wuerffel, former NFL quarterback, Heisman Trophy winner, and namesake of the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy. “Their leadership in the community is just as worthy of recognition as their performance on the field.”
