SAN JOSE, Calif. - Angel Fernandez scored the go ahead goal and Edgar Guerra recorded a five save shutout to lead the San José State men’s soccer team (1-0-0, 0-0-0 WAC) in a 2-0 victory over Cal Poly (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Big West) at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
After a scoreless first half, the Spartans struck twice in the final 30 minutes to take control of the match. Fernandez broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, finishing a setup from Neo Ruiz outside of the box for his first goal of the year.

San José State doubled its advantage in the 82nd minute when forward Arnold Matshazi capitalized on a pass from Gilberto Rivera and a Cal Poly mistake, sealing the result with his first goal of the season.
- This win marks the first opening day victory for the Spartans since the 2022 season when they took down CSU Bakersfield 2-0
- This also marks the first Spartan victory over Cal Poly since 2002
- Fernandez’s goal was his third of his career
- Matshazi played in his first career collegiate game and scored his first career goal
- Ruiz’s assist was the first of his career while Rivera’s assist was his third
- Guerra earned the eighth shutout of his career and fifth as a Spartan
- Cal Poly was picked to finish second in the Big West preseason poll and featured a team with TopDrawerSoccer’s highest rated goalkeeper in the nation
