SAN DIEGO - Sam Keightley recorded five goals and three assists across two matches to lead the No. 10 San José State men’s water polo team (3-0, 0-0 WCC) in a 14-12 win over No. 6 Long Beach State (3-1, 0-0 Big West) and in a 22-10 victory over La Verne (0-4, 0-0 SCIAC) in the second day of the Triton Invitational. The Spartans’ win over No. 6 Long Beach State marks their first victory over the Beach since the program was reinstated in 2015, out of 11 total matchups.
Vs. No. 6 Long Beach State
- After being tied 6-6 at halftime, the Spartans outscored the Beach 6-2 in the third
- Maro Tiozzo and Samu Biros led the Spartans with three goals each
- Mateja Bosić tallied a goal and three assists
- Mitchell Keightley also notched four points, made up of two goals and two assists
- Sam Keightley and Erik Duesund recorded three points in the game
- Mael Suchet and Laszlo Szieben both put the ball into the back of the net as well while Louis Fehrensen and Biros each tallied an assist
- In net, Brendon Gyapjas recorded 10 saves, three of which were from 5-Meter penalty shots
Vs. La Verne
- The Spartans’ 22 goals scored is the most recorded in a game for SJSU since the team scored 28 goals against Fresno Pacific on Sept. 4, 2021
- Sam Keightley and Michael Minera each led the Spartans with four goals
- Szieben, Aidan Johnson, Bence Kristok, Zalan Hegedus and Bosić all scored multiple goals in the match
- Nathan Correia and Mitchell Keightley also tallied a goal each
- In net, Alexey Poletaev stopped nine shots
