BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Arnold Matshazi and Ruben Flores-Thomas each scored a goal to lead San José State men’s soccer (3-0-0, 0-0-0 WAC) to a 2-0 road win at CSU Bakersfield (0-3-0, 0-0-0 Big West) on Friday night. The Spartans are now 3-0 for the first time since 2001.
"Very pleasing to win at CSUB, where I began my career," head coach Simon Tobin, who spent more than two decades coaching at CSU Bakersfield, said. "Lots of great memories of fantastic games on that field."
Matshazi scored in the 18th minute, assisted by Flores-Thomas, who added a goal of his own six minutes later to double the lead.
The Spartan defense, anchored by goalkeeper Edgar Guerra who had three saves, secured the shutout despite 13 shots from the Roadrunners.
- This is the second shutout of the season for the Spartans, the other being against Cal Poly in the season opener
- The Spartans have only allowed one goal through three games this season
- Flores-Thomas scored the first goal of his career and the third assist of his career
- Matshazi has three goals on the season, scoring in all three games played to begin his collegiate career
- This is Guerra's ninth career shutout and 13th win, third of the season
- This win extends the unbeaten streak to eight games against the Roadrunners, dating back to 2017
- Angel Iniguez, Flores-Thomas and Gilberto Rivera each collected an assist
- The Spartans received three votes in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men's Rankings. The last time the Spartans were ranked nationally was in 2005
