SAN JOSE, Calif. - Gilberto Rivera has been named WAC Defensive Player of the Week the conference announced on Tuesday. This marks Rivera’s first career player of the week award and the Spartans’ third player of the week award so far this season.
Rivera played all 90 minutes in the defensive midfield in the Spartans 0-0 draw against CSUN last Thursday at the Spartan Soccer Complex. Rivera led the team in holding the Matadors scoreless and limiting them to just two shots on goal. The Spartans have shutout four of their six opponents to start the season for the first time since 2000.
The Spartans will face No. 8 Stanford this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Spartan Soccer Complex. Tickets can be purchased here and the match will be streamed on WAC International.
