Spartans Hit Season-High Against Santa Clara

SAN JOSE, Calif.—San Jose State hit a season-high .314, led by Lolo Fonua at .364, as the Spartan volleyball team fell to Santa Clara, 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 24-26, 16-25, 15-17) Tuesday night inside Spartan Gym.

  • Fonua hit .364 with 14 kills on 33 attempts and only two errors.
  • Ava Hewitt-Smith led the Spartans with a career-best 15 kills as she hit .360 (15-6-25). She also had a team-best four blocks (1-3).
  • Morgan Graves added 12 kills on 28 attempts and only two errors in hitting .357.
  • Fatimah Hall led the team with three service aces and recorded 30 assists, seven digs and four kills for SJSU.
  • Nazare Judd led the defense with 15 digs, while Talita dos Santos Goncalves had six digs and an ace.
  • The Spartans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, winning the first two sets 25-21 and 25-18.
  • In the third set, SJSU fought back to tie the score at 24-24 before the Broncos closed out the set for the 26-24 win.
  • The fifth set was a battle with eight tied scores and three lead changes. SJSU trailed 9-6, but scored five straight, three on Fonua kills, to take an 11-9 lead.
  • SJSU fought off three Bronco match points before SCU won 17-15.

UP NEXT – The Spartans will play three matches in the next four days at the USF Challenge. The team faces host San Francisco Wednesday night and CSUN Friday night. Both matches start at 6 p.m. The Spartans and Dons play again on Saturday at 1 p.m.
