SAN FRANCISCO— Morgan Graves and Lolo Fonua each had a season-high 19 kills to lead the San José State volleyball team to a 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-7) reverse sweep of San Francisco to open the USF Challenge Wednesday night inside War Memorial at The Sobrato Center.
- Graves recorded her second double-double of the season with her 19 kills and 11 digs. She also hit .333 for the match (195-42).
- Fonua recorded her 19 kills on 37 attempts. She also had five digs and three block assists.
- Devon DeNecochea saw her most playing time of the season, starting the match and playing in all five sets.
- She was the third Spartan to record double-digit kills with a career-best 15 kills and hit .323 (15-5-31).
- Ava Hewitt-Smith led the Spartans with a career-best eight digs, two solo and six block assists. She had five kills in the match, the fifth giving SJSU the victory.
- The Spartans recorded 12 blocks on the night, led by Hewitt-Smith’s 8, DeNecochea with four block assists, Fonua and Learden Lee with three block assists each, Mariana Buchanan with two, and Fatimah Hall and Alyssa Bjork with one block.
- Hall recorded a season-best 37 assists and dug nine balls.
- Lee led the team with three aces.
- Talita dos Santos Goncalves was the team’s libero for the final three sets as she anchored the defense with 15 digs.
- Randilyn Reeves added nine digs in the win.
- After losing the first two sets, San José State came back in the third set, taking the final lead at 24-23 on a Hewitt-Smith and Fonua block. Fonua then got a kill to give SJSU the 25-23 set win.
- The two teams battled in the fourth set, with five lead changes and 10 tied scores. The Spartans took the lead at 18-17 on a Don service error, and Fonua again had the set-winning kill.
- The Spartans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth set and never looked back. Hewitt-Smith put down an overpass for her fifth kill to give SJSU the reverse sweep victory.

UP NEXT – The Spartans continue play the USF Challenge on Friday with a match against CSUN beginning at 6 p.m., and a final match on Saturday versus the Dons at 1 p.m.
