SAN JOSE, Calif. - Ruben Flores-Thomas has been named WAC Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference on Tuesday. This is Flores-Thomas’ first career player of the week award.
Flores-Thomas scored his first career goal and recorded an assist in the Spartans 2-0 shutout win over CSU Bakersfield last Friday. For the Spartans’ first goal in the match, Flores-Thomas dribbled past the Roadrunner defender on the wing and found Arnold Matshazi in the middle of the box who put it in the back of the net. Later, Angel Iniguez found Flores-Thomas wide open on the right wing who dribbled it into the box and shot it near post past the goalkeeper in the top right corner for SJSU's second goal. Flores-Thomas also played all 90 minutes of the game, leading the Spartans to their second clean sheet in three games so far this season.
The Spartans, who are 3-0 for the first time since 2001, look to continue their winning streak against San Francisco on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Spartan Soccer Complex. The game can be streamed on WAC International.
