Spartans Rally to Defeat UC Davis on the Road

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Daniel Fregoso Bautista scored the equalizer and Arnold Matshazi scored the game winning goal to lead the San José State men’s soccer team (6-1-2, 0-0-0 WAC) in a 2-1 victory over UC Davis (0-5-3, 0-0-0 Big West) Wednesday night from Aggie Soccer Field.

UC Davis struck first in the 18th minute to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. The breakthrough for the Spartans came in the 68th minute when Fregoso Bautista netted his second goal of the season, finishing a setup from Cameron Cook. Just five minutes later, Matshazi scored his team-leading sixth goal, again assisted by Cook, to put San José State ahead 2-1.

Defensively, goalkeeper Edgar Guerra anchored the backline with two key saves, earning his sixth win of the season. The Spartan defense limited UC Davis to just four shots in the second half.

  • With the win, the Spartans remain perfect on the road, now 5-0
  • Matshazi now has six goals on the season, putting him tied for first in the WAC
