Spartans Start Strong in Doubles on Day 1 of USD USTA Invitational

SAN DIEGO – Duru Durgun and Emma Fantousis led the way for San José State women’s tennis on the opening day of the University of San Diego USTA Invitational, battling through tight contests in both doubles and singles play.

  • Durgun and Fantousis paired up for a hard-fought doubles victory, edging BYU’s Yu-Yen Chen and Sage Bergeson, 7-6 (7-3).
  • In singles action, Fantousis pushed USD’s Anna Linn Moll to three sets before ultimately falling, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6.
  • Teammate Tara Mihaljevic also competed in singles but dropped her match to Nevada’s Kennedy Robinson, 4-6, 1-6.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will continue to compete in doubles and consolation singles tomorrow on the second day of the USD USTA Invitational, while Cristina Mateos Losada and Katarina Brajovic will kick off the Cal Fall Invite at Berkeley, Calif.
