Spartans Split Play Between USD USTA Invite and Cal Fall Invite

SAN DIEGO– Emma Fantousis delivered strong performances in both singles and doubles to lead the San José State women’s tennis team on day two of the University of San Diego USTA Invitational.

  • Fantousis and Duru Durgun fell 6-4 to USC’s Jana Hossam Salah and Krisha Mahendran.
  • Fantousis swiftly defeated BYU’s Bella Lewis in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
  • In extra matches, Tara Mihaljevic was topped by BYU’s Sage Bergeson, 6-1, 6-0.

 

BERKELEY, Calif.– Cristina Mateos Losada advanced to the singles semifinals to highlight day one for the Spartans at the Cal Fall Invitational. 

  • Mateos Losada and doubles partner Katarina Brajovic were bested by Cal’s Tiziana Marie Schomburg and Anya Murthy, 8-1.
  • In singles play, Mateos Losada quickly defeated Santa Clara’s Jamie Pope, 6-3, 6-0.
  • Mateos Losada prevailed in a tight three-set battle against No.4 Morgan Shaffer from Stanford, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 4-1, to advance to the semifinals.
  • Brajovic fell short to St. Mary’s Sophie Stanton, 6-1, 6-3

UP NEXT: Durgun, Fantousis and Mihaljevic will continue to compete on day three of the USD USTA Invite, as Mateos Losada and Brajovic will resume action on day two of the Cal Fall Invite.
