SAN JOSE, Calif.—Mariana Buchanan came off the bench to record a team-best 11 kills as the San José State volleyball team fell 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-15, 10-15) in a hard-fought match against San Diego State in a Mountain West contest inside Spartan Gym.
- Lolo Fonua and Learden Lee each recorded nine kills, while Morgan Graves and Naima Foster had six kills.
- Lee hit .600 for the match with nine kills on 15 attempts and no errors.
- Ava Hewitt-Smith led SJSU with five block assists to go with five kills.
- Randilyn Reeves led the Spartan defense with 13 digs.
- Fatimah Hall had 24 assists, while Clara Christensen added 17 assists and three aces to lead the team.
- The two teams battled in the first two sets, with 17 tied scores in the first set, including 23-23, before the Aztecs won 25-23.
- The two teams traded leads eight times, the final when SJSU took a 25-24 lead on an Aztec error and won on a Fonua kill.
- After the Aztecs won 25-17 in the third set, San José State hit .414 in the fourth set. The team trailed 5-4, but used a 10-0 run to take a 14-5 lead on a Naima Foster kill. Christensen served 10 times during the run, recording two of her aces during the run. Hewitt-Smith sent the match to a fifth set with her fifth kill of the match.
- The Spartans played in their sixth five-set match of the season and have a 4-2 record in those matches.
