Spartans Sweep Bulldogs In Annual Pink Match

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Six Spartans recorded five or more digs, led by Morgan Graves with eight, as the San José State volleyball team swept Fresno State, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-12), Saturday afternoon in a Mountain West match inside Spartan Gym.

  • After Graves’ eight kills, Fatimah Hall had seven kills, Maraia Buchanan with six, and Sariah Johnson, Ava Hewitt-Smith and Learden Lee with five kills each.
  • Hall added 30 assists, two aces and six digs in the win.
  • Morgan Castaneda came off the bench to lead the team with four service aces and added five digs and two kills. Her first kill of the match won the first set for the Spartans 25-21.
  • Talita dos Santos Gonçalves led the team with 13 digs and added four assists and an ace.
  • Lee led the Spartan blocking attack with five block assists.
  • The Spartans avenged a 3-0 loss at Fresno State on October 4.
  • The first two sets were tightly contested as the first set had 12 tied scores and seven lead changes. SJSU took the final lead in the first set 21-20 on a Lee kill.
  • The second set was similar to the first with eight tied scores and five lead changes. The Bulldogs led 19-15, before the Spartans used a 6-1 run to take the lead for good at 21-20. Graves and Castaneda combined to score the final five points – Graves 3 kills, including the set winner, and Castaneda two aces, for the 25-20 win.
  • SJSU led from first serve in the third set, winning 25-12 on a Johnson kill.
  • Saturday’s match was also designated at the annual Pink Match for breast cancer awareness. Both teams wore pink sleeves and various other pink accessories.

UP NEXT – The Spartans continue the homestand next week with matches against Grand Canyon (10/23) at 6 p.m. and New Mexico (10/25) at 12 p.m. Admission is free to Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
