Hewitt-Smith Blocks Her Way Into Record Book

LOGAN, UtahAva Hewitt-Smith became the 27th Spartan all-time to record double-digit blocks in a match, finishing with 13, as the San José State volleyball team fell 3-2 at Utah State (25-20, 24-26, 26-24, 21-25, 14-16) Wednesday night in a Mountain West match at the Wayne Estes Center.

  • Hewitt-Smith recorded two solo and 11 block assists for her 13 blocks. She is just the second San José State player to record 13 blocks in a match, joining Nandyala Gama, who had 13 block assists against Cal State Fullerton (9/16/16).
  • She was just one block short of the school record of 14, set by four different Spartans since 1983.
  • San José State recorded 18 blocks in the match, the most since the 3-2 win at Santa Clara last season (9/15/24). The 18 blocks are the second-highest total in a match in the Mountain West this season.
  • Learden Lee and Lolo Fanua each added five blocks and eight kills for SJSU.
  • Fatimah Hall recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 37 assists and 13 digs. She recorded a career-best seven block assists for the Spartans.
  • Naima Foster led the Spartan offense, tying her career high with 18 kills, and hit .292 in the match.
  • Morgan Graves was the only other Spartan with double-figure kills, recording 11, and adding nine digs and a block.
  • Randilyn Reeves had her first double-double in a Spartan uniform with 16 digs and 10 assists.
  • Talita dos Santos Gonçalves led the Spartans with a season-best three service aces, followed by Katie O’Sullivan with two aces and Graves and Nazare Judd with one each.
  • The Spartans jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set and went on to win 25-20. The team hit .303 in winning the set (13-3-33).
  • After fighting off two Aggie set points in the second, San José State tied the score at 24-24, before USU won 26-24.
  • The Spartans trailed 19-15 in the third set and slowly chipped away at the lead to close the third set with a 4-0 run to win 26-24, fighting off two more Utah State set points and winning on a Hall and Lee block.
  • The Spartans got as close as 21-19 before Utah State scored four of the next six points to win 25-21.
  • The fifth set featured nine tied scores and seven lead changes, the final at 14-14.
