Iniguez Records Brace in Spartans’ Match Against San Diego State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Angel Iniguez recorded his first brace of the season to lead the San José State men’s soccer team (8-3-4, 1-2-2 WAC) in a 2-2 draw against San Diego State (6-7-2, 2-1-2 WAC) Thursday night from the Spartan Soccer Complex. 

Iniguez opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finishing from outside the box. The Spartans continued to press through the first half, firing 10 shots while holding San Diego State without an attempt.

San Diego State equalized in the 75th minute off a set piece. Spartan defender Javier Lopez was issued a red card just moments later, putting SJSU a man down. San José State regained the lead in the 81st when Iniguez headed in his second of the night. San Diego State scored a penalty kick in the 89th minute to seal the 2-2 draw.

Head coach Simon Tobin was also issued a red card at full time.

  • Iniguez is up to six goals on the season and 25 goals in his career
  • Iniguez now has 18 points this season which leads the team
  • Iniguez had four shots in the game, three on goal
  • Cameron Cook and Arnold Matshazi combined for seven of the Spartans’ 16 shots
  • Ronin Axelson made his second start of the season in net
  • The Spartans played without Gilberto Rivera who was out after being served his fifth yellow card in the Spartans’ previous match
