SAN JOSE, Calif.— Mitchell Keightley led the Spartans in the offensive with four goals to lead the No. 8 San José State men's water polo team (8-5, 3-1 WCC) in a 17-14 victory against No. 9 Pepperdine (11-9, 1-3 WCC) on Friday afternoon at the SRAC.
The Spartans also celebrated László Szieben, Mateja Bosić, Maro Tiozzo, Erik Duesund, Mael Suchet and Michael Minera for Senior Day.
The Spartans battled evenly with Pepperdine throughout the match, keeping the score within one for most of the match. Each team took a one goal advantage in the fourth, but the matched remained deadlocked at the end of regulation. In overtime, the Spartans locked down defensively and took advantage of Pepperdine leaving an empty net to secure the victory.
- Following Mitchell Keightley's four goals, Bosić and Samu Biros each recorded hat tricks. Szieben and Sam Keightley added two goals apiece, while Giancarlo Marquez, Duesund and goalkeeper Brendon Gyapjas each contributed one.
- Aiding in the offense, Biros led the team in assists with three, as Mitchell Keightley and Bosić each dished out two. Tiozzo, Suchet and Duesund each tallied one.
- On the defensive front, Biros led the team with a game high of six steals. Bosić added four, Mitchell Keightley three and Szieben, Duesund and Gyapjas each recorded one.
- Sam Keightley drew four exclusions.
- In goal, Gyapjas totaled eight saves. His goal was his first goal of the season.
