SAN JOSE, Calif. — San José State announced today that its men’s soccer program will compete in the Mountain West Conference beginning with the 2026–27 academic year. The move comes as part of the Mountain West’s expansion to sponsor men’s soccer, marking a significant milestone in the conference’s continued commitment to broad-based athletic excellence.
The Mountain West becomes the first NCAA Division I conference to add men’s soccer since the Ohio Valley Conference in 2023 and the Sun Belt Conference’s reinstatement in 2022.
“We are thrilled to see men’s soccer officially become part of the Mountain West,” said San José State Director of Athletics Jeff Konya. “This move strengthens our competitive opportunities, enhances our recruiting footprint, and connects us with a conference that values excellence on and off the field.”
The inaugural season of Mountain West men’s soccer will feature San José State, Air Force, UC Davis, Grand Canyon University, UNLV, and Utah Tech University, which joins the conference as an affiliate member for men’s soccer and baseball.
“The addition of men’s soccer to the Mountain West represents a bold step forward in our commitment to broad-based excellence,” said MW Commissioner Gloria Nevarez. "These sports not only elevate our competitive profile but also reflect the growing interest and investment from our member institutions. We’re proud to support student-athletes in these disciplines and excited to see the impact they’ll have on our Conference’s future.”
The addition of Utah Tech will bring the total of MW baseball programs to nine and include the United States Air Force Academy, University of California, UC Davis, Grand Canyon University, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, University of Nevada, Reno, University of New Mexico, San José State, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Utah Tech University.
