SAN JOSE, Calif.— Maro Tiozzo scored six goals across two games to lead the No. 6 San José State men’s water polo team (6-4, 1-0 WCC) in a 9-8 win over No. 8 UC Davis (6-8, 0-0 Big West) and in a 13-12 loss over No. 16 UCSB (14-10, 0-0 Big West) at the BW Invitational on Saturday at the SRAC.
Vs. No. 8 UC Davis
- Tiozzo led the Spartans' offense with a game-high five goals, setting the tone for the team's scoring effort.
- Samu Biros, Nathan Correia and Mateja Bosić each added one goal to the tally.
- Erik Duesund took charge in assists with three, followed by Bosić and Biros with two each, while Tiozzo and László Szieben contributed one apiece.
- Defensively, Mael Suchet led the way with three steals, while Tiozzo, Biros and Duesund recorded two each, and Liam Dodunski, Louis Fehrensen and Bosić added one.
- In goal, Brendon Gyapjas anchored the defense with 13 saves, finishing the match with a .619 save percentage.
Vs. No. 16 UCSB
- Biros took the lead on the offensive effort, scoring four goals.
- Kristok contributed with two goals, Tiozzo, Giancarlo Marquez, Suchet, Dodunski, Szieben and Aidan Johnson each scored one.
- Mitchell Keightley and Bosić led the team in assists with two each, Tiozzo, Suchet, Szieben, Fehrensen, Duesund and Alexey Poletaev one.
- On the defensive front, Gyapjas led in steals with three, as Tiozzo, Suchet, Correia, Kristok, Duesund and Poletaev one.
- In goal, Poletaev started early before Gyapjas took over, each tallying three saves.
