Spartans Defeat Cal Baptist in Conference Opener

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Angel Iniguez, Gilberto Rivera and Arnold Matshazi each found the back of the net to lead the San José State men’s soccer team (8-1-2, 1-0-0 WAC) in a 3-1 victory over #RV Cal Baptist (5-2-2, 0-1-0 WAC) Saturday night at the Spartan Soccer Complex.

Rivera opened the scoring in the 17th minute, juking a defender before slotting a left-footed finish into the lower corner. Ten minutes later, Iniguez doubled the lead himself with a brilliant strike from the edge of the box to make it 2–0 before halftime.

In the second half, the Spartans continued to press the attack. Matshazi sealed the win in the 78th minute, heading home a service from Iniguez for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. The Lancers broke through late in the 89th minute with a consolation goal.

Goalkeeper Edgar Guerra earned his eighth win of the year, making six saves in the full 90 minutes. San José State limited the visitors to just four shots in the second half.
