The San José State women’s basketball team plays on the road at California Baptist, Friday afternoon at 5 p.m., inside the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center.
The Spartans face a Lancer team that has started the season with a 3-0 record after wins over UC Riverside (56-53), Pacific (67-54) and Long Beach State (83-60).
This is the first-ever meeting between the two teams in women’s basketball. This will be the third time the Spartans and Lancers will face off in the past week. The Spartans won in men’s water polo, 14-7, last Saturday to clinch a share of the WCC Regular Season Championship. The Spartan men’s soccer team won, 3-2 in overtime Wednesday night, in a semifinal match of the WAC Tournament. Now, the women’s basketball teams face off Friday night.
The Lancers are led by Chance Bucher, who averages 15.0 points per game. Filipa Barros is the top rebounder at 13.7 per game and has dished out 17 assists and grabbed 15 steals. Barros recorded a triple-double in the win over Long Beach State with 10 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists.
San José State opened the season with a 70-51 loss at BYU this past Saturday. Maya Anderson led the team with 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Rylei Waugh came off the bench to contribute 14 points and four rebounds, while Allie Cummins played a team-high 32 minutes with 10 points.
Head coach Jonas Chatterton is in his first season at the helm of the program after coaching stints at Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Colorado and BYU.
