RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Dane Pendleton scored in the 85th minute to lead the San José State men's soccer team (12-4-4, 3-2-2 WAC) in a 2-1 loss to Grand Canyon (13-3-4, 3-1-3 WAC) in the WAC Tournament Championship Saturday afternoon from CBU Stadium.
Pendleton's late goal came off of assists from Angel Iniguez and Gilberto Rivera. The Spartans remained aggressive following the goal but were unable to equalize in the final minutes.
The Spartans fell behind 1-0 in the 66th minute, and GCU added another immediately after in the 67th.
The game was played in inclement weather, with a 45-minute delay between the two halves.
Pendleton, Iniguez, Rivera and Arnold Matshazi were all named to the WAC All-Tournament team.
- This was the Spartans' third WAC tournament finals appearance in the past four years
- The Spartans finished the season with 12 wins, the most since 2003
- Pendleton had two goals and two assists in the tournament; he had no goals and one assist in his career coming into the tournament
- Edgar Guerra recorded three saves in the match
- Rivera finished tied for first in the WAC in assists with eight
- Rivera now has 10 assists in his career
- Iniguez finished the season with seven assists, finishing tied for third in the WAC
- Iniguez's assist pushes him to 25 in his career, tying him for fifth on the SJSU all-time assists list
