SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Lolo Fonua had a career night offensively for the Spartans as the San José State volleyball team kept its hope alive for a bid to the Mountain West Tournament with a 3-1 victory at San Diego State (21-25, 25-20,26-24, 25-17) Thursday night at Peterson Gym.
- Fonua recorded a career-best 24 kills in the win, her second 20+ kill match of the season. She hit. 400 or better for the second straight match.
- Fatimah Hall, playing at her former school, posted her 13th double-double of the season with 45 assists and 14 digs.
- Mariana Buchanan added eight kills, five digs and five blocks in the win. Her eighth kill gave the Spartans the match win.
- Morgan Graves returned to the court after missing the past three matches and also recorded eight kills and three digs.
- Learden Lee and Ava Hewitt-Smith each recorded five kills in the win. Hewitt Smith had five blocks, while Lee added two blocks.
- The win improves the Spartans to 13-15 on the season, but, more importantly, 8-9 in the conference and tied with San Diego State for sixth place.
- After dropping the first set, the Spartans came back in set two to take a 19-18 lead on a Fonua kill, and Fonua finished the set by putting the ball down for the win.
- The Spartans had set point at 24-22, but the Aztecs tied the set at 24-24. Morgan Castenada’s kill gave SJSU the 25-24 lead, and the team had to wait for the 26th point. A successful challenge by head coach Todd Kress reversed the score and gave SJSU the 26-24 win on what would become a Naima Foster kill.
- The Spartans took an early 2-1 lead in the fourth set and never looked back, winning 25-17 on Buchanan’s eighth kill of the night.
