No. 9 Spartans Defeat Air Force in WCC Tournament Opening Round

USAFA, Colo. - Brendon Gyapjas recorded 13 saves to lead the No. 9 and second seeded San José State men’s water polo team (12-7, 5-1 WCC) in a 14-10 victory over the seventh seed Air Force (17-15, 0-6 WCC) in the opening round of the WCC Tournament Friday afternoon from Cadet Natatorium.

The Spartans started strong, dominating the first quarter with a quick lead, ending the period 4-1. Mateja Bosić led the Spartans with an impressive four goals, contributing significantly to their early advantage. Sam Keightley and Mael Suchet also found the back of the net multiple times, helping SJSU build a commanding lead.

Air Force fought back in the second half, but the Spartans scored three goals in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

  • Keightley scored a hat trick and recorded two steals
  • Keightley has now scored three goals or more in six consecutive games
  • Samu Biros scored two goals and led the team with three steals
  • Suchet notched two goals and an assist

  • Mitchell Keightley registered two assists while Suchet, Bosić and Gyapjas all recorded one
  • Gyapjas tallied his 11th win of the season in net
