Spartans at Pepperdine for a Sunday Matinee

The San José State women’s basketball team begins a stretch of three road games in nine days, starting with this Sunday’s game at Pepperdine. This will be just the third meeting between the two schools. The Spartans then play at Portland State on the Friday after Thanksgiving to finish the month of November. SJSU starts December with a game at Big 10 opponent 25/RV Washington, on the first.

RESCHEDULED GAME: The San José State-Bethesda game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, December 10, at 7 p.m., inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center. The game was moved after the November 10 game had to be postponed due to health concerns with the Bethesda program.

ABOUT PEPPERDINE:  The Waves enter Sunday’s game with a 3-1 record, with wins at Cal State Fullerton (84-70), versus Westmont (74-51) and at Northern Arizona (80-74) but suffered a loss at Utah Valley (85-56). Head coach Katie Faulkner is in her second season at the school.

The two teams have only met twice, in back-to-back seasons, with Pepperdine winning both games. The Spartans scored in double figures, led by Chasity Shavers with 19, Alisha Eckberg with 11, and Samantha Marez with 10.

HEAD COACH JONAS CHATTERTON: San José State head coach Jonas Chatterton is in his first season at the helm of the Spartan program.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR BROWN: Amira Brown recorded the first Spartan double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds at California Baptist on November 14. It is just her second double-double of her career after recording 10 points and 11 rebounds at Boise State on January 15th of this year.

WAUGH SOLID OFF THE BENCH: Rylei Waugh is a solid force for the Spartans coming off the bench. She is second on the team in scoring at 11.7 points per game and second in minutes played at 29.9 per game. She was one of two Spartans to score 12 points at California Baptist to lead the team. Waugh is also 16-for-20 from the free throw line and has grabbed 19 rebounds, tied for second on the team.

ANDERSON LEADING SPARTANS: Maya Anderson leads the team in scoring at 13.3 points per game and in rebounding at 8.3 pg. She led the team at BYU with career-bests of 17 points and 8 rebounds. Anderson also led the Spartans in the home opener with 12 points and nine rebounds.

MULTIPLE SPARTANS SCORE IN DOUBLE FIGURES: In the first two games of the season, there were at least three Spartans to score in double figures.
