
USAFA, Colo.- Brendon Gyapjas recorded 17 saves, three steals and a .654 save percentage to lead the No. 9 and second seeded San José State men's water polo team (14-7, 5-1 WCC) in claiming the 2025 WCC Championship Title and defeating No. 15 and fifth seeded Cal Baptist (24-11, 3-3 WCC) 15-9 on Sunday afternoon from Cadet Natatorium. This marks the second WCC Championship for the Spartans in the last three seasons.
Gyapjas was named the WCC Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Gyapjas posted 41 saves and a .569 save percentage across the tournament, leading SJSU in wins against Air Force, Pepperdine and Cal Baptist. Additionally, Gyapjas, Samu Biros and Mateja Bosić were named to the WCC All-Tournament Team. Bosić scored 12 goals across the tournament's three games while Biros scored 10, making them the leading scorers throughout the tournament.
In what began as a back-and-forth match, the Spartans were able to muster a 9-6 halftime lead. The Spartans scored four goals in the third quarter, further pulling ahead of the Lancers and putting the game out of reach.
- Bosić scored a season-high five goals, leading the Spartans in the offense, and contributed one assist.
- Biros, following Bosić's lead, scored four goals and dished out two assists as Sam Keightley and László Szieben each scored two goals.
- Mitchell Keightley and Maro Tiozzo each contributed one goal as well.
- The Spartans also saw assists from Tiozzo, Aidan Johnson and Erik Duesund.
- Aiding in the defense, Tiozzo recorded two steals and Sam Keightley one.
UP NEXT: With the victory, the Spartans have earned an automatic qualifier to the 2025 National Collegiate Men's Water Polo Tournament. Selections for the tournament will be revealed on Monday, Nov. 24, at 9 a.m. PT.
