LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - San José State Offensive Coordinator Craig Stutzmann has been named a nominee for the 2025 Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coaches, as announced Tuesday by the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation.

Now in his second season leading the Spartans’ offense, Stutzmann has implemented his innovative “Spread-and-Shred” system — a creative fusion of the run-and-shoot and modern offensive principles. The results have been remarkable:

  • SJSU ranks No. 8 nationally and first in the Mountain West in passing offense (297.5 yards per game).
  • The Spartans also rank 39th nationally in total offense (417.8 yards per game).

Under Stutzmann’s leadership:

  • Wide receiver Danny Scudero leads the nation in receiving yards per game (112.2) and ranks second nationally in total receiving yards (1,234). He is sixth in touchdowns (10) — including four of 50+ yards — and fourth in both receptions (84) and receptions per game (7.64).
  • SJSU is the only school this season to feature three different 100-yard receivers in a single game — and has accomplished the feat twice.
  • Quarterback Walker Eget went 275 passing attempts without an interception, the third-longest streak in Mountain West history. He leads the conference with 3,047 passing yards and ranks second in passing average (277.0 yards per game). Eget is also one of only two quarterbacks nationwide to throw for 450+ yards twice this season, including a career-high 473 yards and three touchdowns at Stanford (Sept. 27).
  • During a dominant seven-game stretch this season, Stutzmann’s offense averaged 7.2 yards per play.

Last season, Stutzmann guided WR Nick Nash to become San José State’s first unanimous First Team All-American and the program’s first-ever Biletnikoff Award finalist. Nash became just the fourth player in FBS history to achieve the regular-season “triple crown” — leading the nation in receptions (104), yards (1,382), and touchdowns (16) — while breaking multiple school records. Alongside Justin Lockhart (983 yards), they formed one of the most prolific receiving duos in the country.

In 2024, the Spartans totaled 4,183 passing yards, leading the Mountain West and ranking fifth nationally (321.8 yards per game) — the third-highest single-season total in program history — en route to a Hawai‘i Bowl appearance and a seven-win campaign.

The Broyles Award, founded in 1996, recognizes excellence among assistant coaches across college football. The 2025 class includes 63 nominees, the largest in the award’s 30-year history. Fans can participate in the Broyles Award Fan Vote at BroylesAward.com/Vote beginning November 25 at noon CST.

The 2025 Broyles Award winner will be announced at the 30th Annual Broyles Award Ceremony on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Arkansas

UP NEXT: The Spartans host Fresno State on Saturday from CEFCU Stadium, presented by Donor Network West. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and it can be watched on FS1 and heard on 860 AM.
