Garland and Moundi Impress in Spartans' Loss at Utah

SALT LAKE CITY -  Colby Garland registered 21 points, four assists and three steals to lead the San José State men’s basketball team (0-1, 0-0 MW) in a 84-75 loss to Utah (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) Monday night from the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. 

Yaphet Moundi recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while JaVaughn Hannah added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Jermaine Washington chipped in 9 points and Ben Roseborough contributed 8 points off the bench.

The Spartans trailed 44–38 at halftime after a back-and-forth first period that featured seven lead changes and five ties. In the second half, SJSU briefly took the lead on a 7–0 run midway through the frame, but Utah answered with a run of their own to secure the win.

San José State held its own on the boards, grabbing 36 rebounds to Utah’s 40, and outscored the Utes 44–42 in the paint. However, the Spartans were limited to just 30 percent from three-point range and 50 percent from the free-throw line.

  • Garland is the first Spartan to score 20 points in a Spartan season opener since Richard Washington scored 38 points against Fresno Pacific to open the 2020-21 season
  • Moundi’s double-double was the seventh of his career
  • Moundi is the first Spartan to record a double-double in a Spartan season opener since also Richard Washington against Fresno Pacific in the 2020-21 season, who tallied 12 rebounds in addition to his 38 points
  • Moundi also snatched over 10 rebounds for the eighth time in his career
  • Melvin Bell Jr., Roseborough and Douglas Langford all made their collegiate debuts in the game
