Spartans Begin 2025-26 Season at BYU Saturday

 San José State women’s basketball enters a new era as the Spartans open the 2025-26 season under new head coach Jonas Chatterton. SJSU travels to Brigham Young for a non-conference game Saturday afternoon. Chatterton brings the Spartans to the place where he spent his first eight seasons as an assistant coach after receiving his degree at Utah.

The Spartans return six players from last season’s team and welcome eight new players. San José State finished last year with a 10-22 overall record and 3-15 Mountain West mark.


ABOUT BYU:  The Cougars enter Saturday’s game with a 1-0 record after defeating Coastal Carolina, 91-57, Wednesday evening inside the Marriott Center. Brinley Cannon led the team with 16 points, and five Cougars scored in double-figures in the win. Head coach Lee Cummard is in his first season at the helm of the program.

The Spartans and Cougars faced off at the Maui Jim Maui Classic. SJSU senior Fieme’a Hafoka made history on the island, becoming the first-ever Maui product to play in a Division I game on the island. Cydni Lewis led SJSU that night with 18 points.

HEAD COACH JONAS CHATTERTON:  San José State head coach Jonas Chatterton begins his first season at the helm of the Spartan program.

FINAL MW TEAM TO OPEN PLAY: The Spartans are the final team to being play for the 2025-26 season on Saturday. Utah State will play the team’s first game of the season Friday night by hosting Utah.

WELCOME BACK TO UTAH: Head coach Jonas Chatterton is very familiar with the state of Utah, growing up there and graduating from the University of Utah in 2000. He helped revive the basketball program at Westminster College while studying at Utah. After graduation, Chatterton started his Division I coaching career at BYU under Jeff Judkins. He spent eight seasons at the school and helped the Cougars win the 2002 Mountain West Championship and advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

LOTS OF BLUE AND GOLD IN THE STANDS: There is a strong possibility that the Spartans could have a good share of fans in the stands on Saturday. Harisa Mehmedovic and her family live in Salt Lake City, and she graduated from Summit Academy.

Coach Chatterton’s family resides in the Salt Lake City area. In fact, his brother, Jeremy, is the principal at Highland High School in SLC.

HELLO FRIEND: San José State and BYU were part of the Western Athletic Conference for three seasons (1996-99), but faced each other just two times as conference foes, during the 1998-99 season.

UP NEXT: The Spartans open the home portion of the schedule on Monday, November 10, against Bethesda at 7 p.m., inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center. The team then plays at California Baptist on Friday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m.
