PROVO, Utah—Three Spartans scored in double-figures, led by Maya Anderson’s 17, as the San José State women’s basketball team opened the 2025-26 season and Jonas Chatterton era Saturday at BYU, as the Cougars prevailed 70-51.
- Anderson scored in double figures for the first time in her Spartan career.
- She also led the team in rebounding with a career-best eight.
- Rylei Waugh came off the bench to score 14 points for SJSU. She was 6-for-7 from the free throw line and grabbed four boards.
- Allie Cummins made her Spartan debut as she scored 10 points on Saturday.
- Chatterton made his head coaching debut Saturday in his home state in front of friends and family. He was an assistant coach at BYU from 2001-09.
- Kaliyah Dillard made her presence known on defense with a career-high three blocked shots and grabbed six rebounds.
- The Spartans trailed just 22-20 after the first quarter. The team trailed 18-8 with 5:21 left in the quarter and used a 12-2 run to tie the game at 20-20 on a McKenna Simons made three-pointer with 40 seconds left.
- San José State tied the score at 22-22 just 12 seconds into the second quarter on a Cummins basket. Unfortunately, the team did not score against until the 1:35 mark of the quarter as BYU opened up a 13-point lead. The Cougars led 35-25 at halftime.
- SJSU got as close as seven in the third quarter at 37-30 on a Cummins made free throw at the 8:21 mark.
- The Spartans made a late surge near the end of the game, cutting the BYU lead to 11 at 62-51 with 2:55 on the clock, as Waugh made a layup. The Spartans were held scoreless the rest of the game as BYU won 70-51.
UP NEXT – The Spartans open the home portion of the schedule this Monday, November 10, against Bethesda. Tip time is 7 p.m., inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased here or at the ticket window the day of the game.
