Four Spartans Named First Team All-Far West Region

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Four Spartans, Edgar Guerra, Gilberto Rivera, Angel Iniguez and Arnold Matshazi, have been named First Team All-Far West Region, announced by the United Soccer Coaches. 

The Spartans concluded the season with a record of 12-4-4, earning 12 wins in a season for the first time since 2003. The Spartans returned to the WAC Championship game for the second year in a row and third time in the last four years.

Gilberto Rivera, Midfielder, Junior, Hayward, Calif.

  • First Team All-Far West Region
  • Named 2025 First Team All-WAC
  • Placed on the 2024 and 2025 WAC All-Tournament Teams
  • Recorded two goals and eight assists in the 2025 season
  • Started in all 19 of his appearances in 2025 and played 1,648 minutes
  • Has three goals and ten assists in his college career
  • Earned an invite to the 2025 MLS College Showcase

Angel Iniguez, Midfielder, Senior, Daly City, Calif.

  • Finished tied for fifth in most assists recorded in SJSU history with 25 in his career
  • First player in SJSU history to be named first team all-conference in three consecutive seasons
  • Named First Team All-WAC, First Team All-Far West Region and to the o the WAC All-Tournament Team in 2025
  • Second season in a row being named First Team All-Far West Region
  • Started in all 20 appearances this season
  • Recorded nine goals and seven assists 
  • Named to TopDrawerSoccer’s Team of the Week twice and WAC Offensive Player of the Week once this past season
  • Finished his SJSU career with 28 goals and 25 assists

Edgar Guerra, Goalkeeper, Senior, Santa Rosa, Calif.

  • First Team All-Far West Region
  • Appeared and started in net in 18 matches 
  • Played 1584 minutes in the season 
  • Recorded eight shutouts on the season, the most in the WAC and tied for 21st in the nation
  • Tallied 45 saves throughout the season
  • Named WAC Goalkeeper of the Week after recording a five save shutout against Cal Poly (8/21) and adding three saves in a win against Saint Mary's (8/24)
  • Named WAC Goalkeeper of the Week after tallying a season high of six saves in a victory over California Baptist (10/4)

Arnold Matshazi, Forward, Sophomore, Milton Keynes, England

  • Named First Team All-WAC, WAC All-Tournament Team and First Team All-Far West Region
  • Led the Spartans with 12 goals on the season
  • None of his goals were penalties
  • His 12 goals was second in the WAC and tied for 15th most in the nation
  • First Spartan since 2003 to record 12 goals in a season
  • First Spartan since 1996 to record double-digit goals in their first season of action
  • Started in all 20 appearances
  • Six of his 12 goals were game-winners, tied for the fourth most in the nation
  • Scored a goal in his first three collegiate matches
  • Headed in the game-winning goal with less than 10 seconds remaining against Saint Mary's (8/24)
  • Scored a brace against No. 3 Stanford (9/17) 
  • Named WAC Offensive Player of the Week after he curled in the game-winning goal in a comeback win over UC Davis (9/24)
  • Scored a goal in four matches in a row from 10/26-11/12
  • Recorded a goal and his first career-assist against San Diego State in the opening round of the WAC Tournament (11/9)
  • Scored the game-winning goal in overtime in the WAC Tournament Semifinals against Cal Baptist to send the Spartans to the WAC Championship (11/12)
