STANFORD, Calif.– Sam Keightley recorded three goals and an assist to lead the No. 6 and fifth seeded San José State men’s water polo team (14-8) to a 13-9 loss to the No. 5 and fourth seeded Fordham (26-3) in the first round of the National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championships Friday afternoon from Avery Aquatic Center.
After a back and forth first quarter, Fordham pulled ahead to take a 7-4 halftime advantage. The Spartans fought back, cutting it to as close as two goals, but were unable to get any closer.
- This marked the second time in the last three seasons the Spartans qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
- Samu Biros recorded two goals, while Maro Tiozzo, Giancarlo Marquez, Erik Duesund, and Mateja Bosić each added one.
- Tiozzo, Mael Suchet, Mitchell Keightley, Sam Keightley, Duesund, and Bosić all recorded assists.
- Defensively, Sam Keightley and Biros each grabbed a steal, and Marquez, László Szieben, and Duesund each notched a block.
- In the cage, Brendon Gyapjas posted eight saves and added a steal.
- The Spartans conclude the season with 14 wins, marking their fifth straight season with double-digit wins.
