The San José State women’s basketball team continues play in the Bay Area on Sunday, this time making the 42-mile trek up Interstate 880 to Haas Pavilion to face ACC foe California for a 2 p.m. The teams suffered losses on Thursday night in hard-fought games for both teams. San José State continues at home next week with a non-conference game against Bethesda on December 10 at 7 p.m.
ABOUT CALIFORNIA: The Bears enter Sunday’s game with a 6-3 overall record after losing a nail-biter at Missouri Thursday night, 68-67. The Bears have wins over Sacramento State (69-52), Pacific (60-52), Charlotte (69-44), Harvard (76-65), Saint Mary’s (70-62) and Grand Canyon (68-63). Head coach Charmin Smith is in her seventh season at the helm of the program and has an 87-92 coaching record.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES ON THE COURT: This season, two Spartans have recorded double-doubles for the Spartans. Amira Brown recorded the first Spartan double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds at California Baptist on November 14. It is just her second double-double of her career after recording 10 points and 11 rebounds at Boise State on January 15th of this year.
Gabriela Pato recorded her first colleigate double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds against Saint Mary’s on December 4.
WAUGH MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR THE SPARTANS: Rylei Waugh is key cog for the Spartans this season, whether starting or coming off the bench. She is second on the team in scoring with 77 points, 11.0 per game, and in rebounding with 41, 5.9 pg. Waugh has dished out a team-best 11 assists and grabbed a team-high 12 steals. She has led the team in scoring in three games and in rebounding in three games.
Waugh started the season by coming off the bench in the first four games but transitioned to a starter for the Portland State contest. In that game, she led the team with a career-high 18 points and three assists and grabbed a career-best four steals.
ANDERSON LEADING SCORER FOR SPARTANS: Maya Anderson leads San José State in scoring with 84 points, 12.0 per game. She has led the in points in three games including a career-best 18 points against Saint Mary’s. She has scored in double figures in five games this season including 17 points at BYU to start the season.
Anderson also leads the team with 42 rebounds, 6.0 per game. She has led the team in boards in two games - 8 at BYU and 9 against UC Santa Barbara.
CUMMINS FOR THREEEE!: Allie Cummins leads the Spartans with 13 three-pointers made on the season. She hit 30 percent of those during the Saint Mary’s game. Cummins hit four made threes in the first quarter of the game, scoring 12 of the team’s 18 points in the quarter. Cummins is the first Spartan to make four threes in a quarter since Sydni Summers made four in the fourth quarter against UC Santa Barbara in November of 2024.
UP NEXT: The Spartans host the rescheduled game with Bethesda on Wednesday, December 10, at 7 p.m., inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
