SAN JOSÉ, Calif. – The San José State men’s golf team completed a standout 2025 fall campaign, highlighted by a team victory at the Jim DeLapa Collegiate and several record-shattering individual performances. Under the leadership of head coach John Kennaday, the Spartans secured four top-six finishes across their four fall tournaments, establishing a strong foundation for the spring season.
Team Victory at Jim DeLapa Collegiate
The pinnacle of the fall season came in late September at the Jim DeLapa Collegiate in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The Spartans claimed the team title with a total score of 825 (-15), punctuated by a final-round 269. Junior Keshav "KC" Mungali led the charge, finishing second overall with a career-best 197 (-13), while senior Ivan Barahona tied for fourth at 204 (-6).
Iyer’s Record-Breaking Fall
Senior Avinash Iyer delivered one of the most prolific fall seasons in program history, recording two top-five finishes and three top-ten finishes.
- Career-Best Round: Iyer fired a career-low 63 (-9) in the final round of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, tying for the second-best single round in San José State history.
- Ka’anapali Classic: He concluded the fall with a T-5th finish at the Ka’anapali Classic, shooting a 14-under-par 199, which ranks among the top-10 lowest 54-hole scores in the modern record book.
- Consistent Leadership: Iyer averaged 68.58 strokes per round over 12 rounds, tied with Barahona for the team lead.
Fall Season Highlights
- The Spartans went 49-13.
- The Spartans shot 80 under par for the fall.
- Palouse Collegiate (Sept. 9-10): The Spartans opened the season with a sixth-place finish (830, -22). Iyer led the team with a T-9th finish at 205 (-8).
- Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational (Sept. 20-22): SJSU tied for fourth place out of 23 teams. In addition to Iyer's record 63, Barahona finished 11th at 210 (-6).
- Ka’anapali Classic (Oct. 27-29): The team finished sixth in a highly competitive 19-team field with a total of 819 (-33), their lowest team score of the fall relative to par.
Individual Standouts
- Barahona: The senior matched Iyer with a 68.58 scoring average and recorded 12 rounds of par or better with Iyer this fall.
- The only Spartan to shoot par or better in every round this fall.
- No. 1-ranked collegiate on APGA Tour.
- Mungali: Along with his runner-up finish in Michigan, Mungali averaged 70 strokes per round and posted nine rounds of par or better.
The Spartans return to competition on Monday at the Southwestern Intercollegiate at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
