WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - Ivan Barahona, Avinash Iyer, and Keshav “KC” Mungali each carded a two-over 72 on Monday to lead the San José State men’s golf team through the opening round of the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club.
As a unit, the Spartans posted a team score of 290 (+10), placing them in eighth heading into the second round. Notably, San José State sits ahead of several ranked programs, including UCLA, Washington, and New Mexico.
The Lead Trio:
- Barahona, Iyer, and Mungali are currently tied for 30th place. Mungali paced the team with four birdies on the day, while Barahona and Iyer recorded three apiece.
Barahona’s Momentum:
- Barahona entered Monday's round fresh off a stellar performance at the APGA Farmers Insurance Invitational, where he finished in a tie for second with a 5-under 139. He was the field’s highest-finishing amateur by 11 strokes.
The Eagle:
- Christian Maggard provided the highlight of the round with the team’s lone eagle. He finished the day with a 74 (+4) and is tied for 42nd.
Rounding out the Lineup:
- Jed Dy shot a 78 (+8) to sit in a tie for 65th, while Itai Cohen, competing as an individual, posted a first-round 90.
