Spark's Golden Goal Leads No. 18 Spartans To Victory

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Darcy Spark scored five times Friday, including the golden goal, to give the No. 18 San José State women’s water polo team a 15-14 victory over No. 12 Marist at the Bronco Invitational.

  • Spark got a pass on the right side of the cage from Nynke Willemsen and put the ball in the back of the net with just 10 seconds remaining in the third overtime.
  • Rose Jensen forced the game to overtime with back-to-back, even-strength goals less than a minute apart in the fourth quarter. Down 12-10, she brought the Spartans to within one with a goal at 1:40 on the clock. The tying goal came with just 51 seconds left as she was able to get the ball to go off the Marist goalie’s fingertips and continue into the goal.
  • Jensen’s first goal of the game gave SJSU an early 2-1 lead in the first quarter.
  • The Spartans scored twice in the first overtime period as Sarah Woren took a Spark pass to score her only goal of the game.  Just 43 seconds later, Bridget Cranley scored her third goal of the match, getting a pass from Emma Ruzic to set up the goal.
  • San José State did not score in the second overtime as Marist tied the match with an even-strength goal with 1:18 left in the period. Neither team scored in the third overtime period until Spark’s goal with 10 seconds remaining.
  • Spartan goalie Tatianna Raffin made seven saves in the match for the victory

UP NEXT – The Spartans continue play at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday with matches against No. 25 CSUN at 8:30 a.m. and No. 20 Brown at 1:30 p.m. San José State finishes the weekend with a match on Sunday against Pomona-Pitzer at 9 a.m.
