SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Dylan Jackson recorded two RBIs and Jake McCoy went 2-for-4 with a walk to lead the San José State baseball team (2-2, 0-0 MW) in a 8-6 loss to Santa Clara (3-2, 0-0 WCC) Wednesday afternoon from Stephen Schott Stadium.
The Spartans totaled nine hits and drew seven walks, battling through cold and rainy conditions throughout the game. Santa Clara finished 6-for-10 with runners in scoring position to secure the win.
San José State struck first in the opening inning. Alex Fernandes doubled to right to lead off the game and later scored as part of a two-run frame. Jackson delivered a key two-RBI single to shallow right, giving the Spartans an early 2-0 advantage. The game would be delayed 22 minutes due to heavy rain midway through the first inning.
After Santa Clara answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, the Spartans responded with three runs in the second inning to reclaim the lead. Vincent Gamberdella drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk, and Brent Cota followed with an RBI walk as SJSU took a 5-4 edge. The Broncos pulled away in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs in the inning and would not relinquish the lead.
Cota finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks, while Fernandes scored twice and added a double. JC Osorio-Agard tallied two hits and drove in a run.
On the mound, Spencer Kratt received his first start of the season. Peter Herrick provided three innings of relief, allowing one run while striking out two.. Sam Boyle and Kyler Bacosa combined for two additional innings. Luca Staiano (0-1) was charged with the loss. Caden Duke pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.
San José State left 11 runners on base and went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
