NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — The San José State women’s tennis team (4-1, 0-0 MW) suffered its first setback of the season Friday, falling 7-0 to CSUN (4-1, 0-0 Big West) at the Matador Tennis Complex.
Despite the sweep, the Spartans battled through several tight sets, highlighted by Emma Fantousis taking her match to a third-set tiebreaker.
Singles Results
The Matadors took control early, but SJSU pushed back in the later stages of the lineup, with two matches going to tiebreakers.
Fantousis fought through the longest match of the day, ultimately falling in a close 5-7, 6-3, 10-5 battle.
- Tara Mihaljevic forced a second-set tiebreaker before falling 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
- Cristina Mateos Losada also pushed her opponent to the limit, dropping a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) decision.
- Duru Durgun fell 6-3, 6-4.
- Soledad Fayos Capilla lost 6-3, 6-2.
- Camila Celis fell 6-1, 7-5.
Doubles Action
CSUN secured the doubles point with competitive wins on the lower courts:
- Mihaljevic and Celis narrowly lost a 7-5 heartbreaker.
- Fayos Capilla and Mateos Losada fell 6-4.
UP NEXT: The Spartans look to bounce back as they continue their road trip against Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Feb. 22. First serve is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
