SAN JOSE, Calif. – Soledad Fayos Capilla provided the heroics, clinching the deciding point in a grueling three-set thriller as the Spartans at one point were down 3-0 and on the brink of defeat, the San José State women’s tennis team (5-2, 0-0 MW) defeated UC Davis (7-8, 1-2 Big West) 4-3 on Thursday afternoon at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
The Clincher
With the match on the line, all eyes turned to court two, where Fayos Capilla was locked in a physical battle. After taking the first set in a 7-4 tiebreak and dropping the second, Fayos Capilla found herself facing a 1-4 deficit in the final set. In a display of incredible resilience, she surged back to win six of the final seven games, securing a 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-5 victory and completing the Spartan comeback.
The Turning Point
The afternoon started in favor of the Aggies, who swept all three doubles matches to secure the opening point and quickly added two singles victories to build a commanding 3-0 lead. However, the Spartans refused to fold, rallying to win the final four matches on court.
- Duru Durgun ignited the spark on court one, shifting the momentum with a disciplined 6-4, 6-3 straight-set win.
- Camila Celis kept the pressure on, mirroring that scoreline with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on court five to pull the Spartans within one.
- Emma Fantousis delivered the equalizer on court three, outlasting her opponent in a see-saw 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 battle to knot the overall score at 3-3.
