FINAL ROAD TRIP FINISHES AT GCU SATURDAY:  The San José State women’s basketball team plays its final regular-season road game on Saturday as the Spartans travel to play GCU for the first time in school history. The Lopes have a two-game winning streak after winning at Fresno State, 57-42, Wednesday night and defeating Utah State, 63-43, last Saturday at home.

San José State enters Saturday’s game with a 4-25 overall record and a 2-16 mark in the Mountain West. The Spartans are looking for their first road win of the season. SJSU lost the earlier meeting this season, 79-59, on December 28. Maya Anderson led the team with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Allie Cummins scored 14 points and dished out four assists

ABOUT GRAND CANYON: The Lopes enter Sunday’s game with an 11-17 overall record and 10-8 mark in the Mountain West. The Lopes are sixth in the Mountain West standings, two games in front of  Fresno State. Head coach Winston Gandy is in his first season at the school.

NOT FIRST TIME AT GCU ARENA: While this is the first time San José State will face GCU on their homecourt, it is not the first time the Spartans have played in the arena. During the 2020-21 season, San José State was forced to relocate during COVID due to restrictions from Santa Clara County. SJSU moved basketball operations to Phoenix for a month. The Spartans played one game at GCU Arena and won against Utah State, 78-73, on December 21, 2020.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: Through February 25th, the Spartans rank in the top-100 nationally in five categories.

BLOCK PARTY!: San José State is among the top-100 teams in the country in blocked shots with 115, 4.0 pg. The Spartans blocked a season-high nine blocks in the game at Pepperdine on November 23.  The nine blocks are tied for the most by a Mountain West team this season and the most by an SJSU team since the nine recorded in a 72-49 win at Air Force on January 20, 2016.

Gabriela Pato leads the team with 37 blocks, with four against Saint Mary’s and at Nevada, while Kaliyah Dillard is second with 24, with three at BYU and at Colorado State. Amira Brown and Amelie Sitterud have each blocked 10 shots.

BLOCK PARTY #2: The Spartans recorded 8 blocks at Nevada on February 25. SJSU started the game with six blocks in the first quarter. Gabriela Pato tied her career high with four blocks, while Maya Anderson had a career-best three blocks, and Kaliyah Dillard recorded the final block.

UP NEXT: San José State plays the final regular season game this Tuesday, March 3, against Colorado State, inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center. Three Spartan seniors - Katarina Anderson, Amira Brown, and McKenna Simons will be honored prior to the 7 p.m. tip.
