Three Spartans Named Preseason Mountain West All-Conference

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Tyler Albanese, Kyle Calzadiaz and Alex Fernandes have been named to the Preseason Mountain West All-Conference Team, voted on by the conference’s head coaches, released by the conference on Wednesday. The Spartans were also picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll.

The Spartans were one of two teams to have multiple players on the Preseason Mountain West All-Conference Team, just behind Nevada who took five spots. The Spartans were also the only team to have multiple pitchers named to the preseason All-Conference Team

Last season, the Spartans returned to the Mountain West Championship game for the fourth season in a row despite returning just 14 players and being picked last in the preseason poll. SJSU was 29-30 in 2025 and had two players, Rocco Caballero and Albanese, named Second Team All-Mountain West. Additionally, Fernandes, Calzadiaz and Albanese were all named to last season’s Mountain West All-Tournament Team.

The Spartans’ will open the 2026 season on Friday, Feb. 13 against Long Beach State in Long Beach, Calif.

  • 2025 Second Team All-Mountain West and 2025 Mountain West All-Tournament Team
  • Appeared in 22 games last season, recording nine saves, the third most in a season in SJSU history
  • Struck out 56 last season, finishing the year with a 4-3 record and a 2.97 ERA
  • In the Mountain West Tournament, earned a save against SDSU and received the win against Nevada to lead SJSU back to the Mountain West Championship Finals, all in the same day

Kyle Calzadiaz, Pitcher, Senior, Walnut, Calif., Mt. San Antonio College

  • 2025 Mountain West All-Tournament Team
  • Made eight starts in 15 appearances last season for SJSU, recording a 2-2 record and one save
  • Struck out 56 and held opponents to .225 batting average on the season
  • Had a 3.15 ERA in conference play
  • Threw a career-high eight strikeouts against Nevada to help send the Spartans to the Mountain West Championship Finals

Alex Fernandes, Outfielder, Senior, San Marcos, Calif., Memphis

  • Named to the 2025 Mountain West All-Tournament Team and earned one player of the week award last season
  • Appeared in all 59 games, starting in 58 of them and reaching base safely in 56 last year
  • Led the Spartans with a .361 batting average and .447 OBP last season
  • Recorded 11 doubles, six triples, three home runs, 28 RBIs, 54 runs, 14 stolen bases and 32 walks last year
  • Recorded eight hits and six runs in last season’s Mountain West Tournament
