Spartans Play Two Ranked Opponents in First Day of Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - Sarah Deplitch hit a two RBI double to lead San José State Softball (0-2, 0-0 MW) in a 7-3 loss against No. 17 Stanford (2-0, 0-0 ACC) and a 9-0 five innings loss to No. 20 Oklahoma State (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) in the first day of the Stanford Invitational from Stanford Softball Stadium on Friday.

Game 1: No. 20 Oklahoma State

  • In the morning opener, a powerful Oklahoma State offense used a six-run first inning to propel itself to a 9-0 run-rule victory.
  • The Cowgirls' aggressive baserunning was a deciding factor, as they recorded eight stolen bases during the five-inning contest.

Game 2: No. 17 Stanford

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first inning and added two more in the third thanks to Deplitch, who hit a two-run double to left center to score Sophia Burdick and Ahmiya Noriega and give SJSU a 3-2 advantage.

However, Stanford surged ahead late, scoring two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to secure the win. The late-inning heroics were highlighted with a two-run home run to deep left field in the bottom of the sixth.

  • Shay McDowell drove in the Spartans' first run of the game and season with an RBI single to right field in the opening frame. She also finished the day with two hits.
  • Noriega reached base twice and scored a run. She also recorded a stolen base in the fifth inning.
  • Reina Zermeno collected two hits in the contest, including a single in the seventh inning.
  • Burdick contributed a base hit and scored a run following Deplitch's double in the third.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will continue play at the Stanford Invitational tomorrow, starting with Cal at 1:00 p.m., followed by a second meeting with No. 17 Stanford at 6:00 p.m., which can be seen on the ACC Network.
