SAN JOSE, Calif. – Six different players drove in a run to lead the San José State baseball team (6-12, 1-1 MW) in a 8-7 loss to New Mexico (13-6, 1-1 MW) Saturday afternoon from Excite Ballpark in the second game of a three game series.
San José State finished with seven runs on nine hits, while the Lobos collected eight runs on 13 hits in the contest. The game featured five errors, three from the Lobos and two from the Spartans.
New Mexico scored a run in the first second and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. An RBI triple from Dylan Jackson in the bottom of the fifth gave the Spartans a run back, but the Lobos answered with a run of their own in the top of the sixth. The Spartans cut the deficit to one after a two run sixth inning thanks to RBIs from Alan Ramirez and Jake McCoy.
New Mexico blew it open in the ninth, scoring four runs, three of which were unearned, to take an 8-3 advantage. The Lobos plated runs off a home run, rbi single and a throwing error.
The Spartans mounted a big rally in the bottom of the ninth. After singles from Rocco Caballero and JC Osorio-Agard, San José State loaded the bases and began chipping away. A pinch-hit RBI single by Rohne Klein, a hit-by-pitch RBI from Neil Jansen, and an RBI groundout from Alex Fernandes cut the deficit to one.
Another run scored when a ball off the bat of Brent Cota was misplayed in left field, making it 8–7 with the bases loaded. However, New Mexico induced a game-ending double play to escape the jam.
San José State used four pitchers in the game, allowing eight runs (four earned) on 13 hits while striking out seven. Luka Pintar received the loss in his first start of the season, allowing two earned runs and six hits across 4.1 innings.
