SAN JOSE, Calif. – Dylan Smith and Tyler Albanese combined to hold New Mexico scoreless, allowing only four hits while striking out six, to lead the San José State baseball team (7-12, 2-1 MW) in a 3-0 victory over New Mexico (13-7, 1-2 MW) Sunday afternoon from Excite Ballpark in the final game of a three game series. With the win, the Spartans take the series over the Lobos 2-1.
The Spartans scored in three separate innings and held the Lobos to just four hits to earn the shutout win. Starting pitcher Smith delivered a dominant outing on the mound, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing only two hits and striking out three to earn the victory. Reliever Albanese closed the door with three scoreless innings and three strikeouts to collect his first save of the season.
San José State struck first in the bottom of the second inning. After JC Osorio-Agard doubled down the left field line, Alan Ramirez delivered an RBI double to left field, bringing home the game’s first run.
The Spartans extended their lead in the third inning when Brent Cota singled through the right side to score Jake McCoy, giving San José State a 2–0 advantage.
San José State added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Fernandes reached on a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch, pushing the lead to 3–0, which held through the final frame.
Offensively, the Spartans recorded six hits, including doubles from Osorio-Agard and Ramirez. Cota and Ramirez each drove in a run while the Spartans drew eight walks.
Defensively, San José State played a clean game with no errors, while the pitching staff limited New Mexico to 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
- This is the Spartans fourth shutout of the season and second in the series
- The Spartans’ four shutouts this season are the most shutouts since 2015
- This also marks the first time the Spartans’ shutout a team twice in a series since 2011 when they recorded two shutout wins over Louisiana Tech in 2011
- Alex Fernandes went 1-for-2 and was walked three times
- Fernandes improved his hit streak to nine games and his on base streak to 18 games, every game this season
- McCoy went 1-for-2 with two walks
